From your home screen, head to Settings, choose General, then Keyboards. Tap International Keyboards, Add New Keyboard, and scroll down to “Emoji“.

You’ll return to your Keyboards list and see “Emoji” as an entry.

In order to use this new keyboard (or any secondary keyboard for that matter), you’ll notice a new button in the bottom left corner of your keyboard.

Tap the globe in the bottom left and you’ll be given several groups with multiple pages each. You have faces, symbols, numbers, icons, etc. You name it, it’s probably there.

Home automation technology is transforming ordinary homes into automate homes that are capable of controlling almost all the equipments through a centralized control unit. Modern smart home technology is the key to implement the automation systems effectively. Increasing demand for automation systems has also paved way for the growth of many home automation firms that are capable of carrying out the entire automation process according to the expectation and budget of the homeowners.

Nowadays, more and more homes are automated completely compared to past decades. Home automation offers a wide range of benefits like improved security features, reduced energy consumption, luxury lifestyle and lot of savings. However, if you need to transform your home into a completely automated home, then you need to know more about the automation systems.

Smart home technology has incorporated many new features and is proving to be affordable and reliable with its enhanced performance.

Security systems

One of the important features of home automation technology is that it enhances the overall security aspects of your home with its modernized automation systems that are designed to track, monitor and alert during security breaches.

Motion detector is one of the home automation systems that can detect the movements of the person even during night clearly. This modern system is used widely due to its reliable nature.

Video surveillance system offers complete access over almost all the security systems like motion detectors, camera, burglar alarms and more. Using this system you can monitor all the activities that are taking place around your home from your bedroom.

Lighting

Now, you can program the lightings using expert software developers to switch on and off according to your expectation. This smart home technology will reduce the energy bills considerably by switching of unwanted lights. Another important benefit of programmable lighting units is that now, you might not need to wander around your home to check and switch off each light.

Entertainment

All your entertainment systems can be controlled through a single remote or button in time without the need for checking out each unit. You can control the dish, TV, home theatre system, and other entertainment devices using a single remote in time.

Phone systems

Using caller ID and a home automation controller, you can now even screen the calls if you want to restrict some person from ringing your phone periodically. You can even interconnect your phone and get access to other phones that are in other rooms from just one place.

Irrigation

If you are having garden or farm, you can program the pumps to start or stop water supply according to your schedules.

Air conditioning systems

Using a Remote-control thermostat, you can control your air conditioning units according to your intention from your driveway even without entering your home.

These are some advanced features of home automation technology.

So the year 2012 is the year of trying new things for me. So far I’ve dabbled in Visual Studio LightSwitch. My next task, SharePoint.

I’ve used SharePoint in the past for collaborating and sharing of Office documents (as an alternative to SkyDrive). Why not try to set it up, myself?

Thanks to the wonderful technology that is virtual machines, I fire up a copy of Windows Server 2008 and drop in SharePoint 2010.

Installing SharePoint wasn’t too difficult. After loading the disc, you must install some prerequisite updates and add ons in order for SharePoint to work properly (or even install in the first place). My first attempt at this was a failure, and so was my second. At first I didn’t know why. I then realized that Windows Update never ran. If you, too, have problems with the prerequisites, run Windows Update, let the machine restart, and try it again.

Once the prerequisites were done, the installation process of SharePoint was pretty smooth, like most other Microsoft Office-type products. After completion, it’s time to configure SharePoint. Launching the config wizard will allow it to create its necessary configurations including databases and what not. Be prepared for this to take several minutes: mine took almost ten.

Once it’s done, it will ask you to navigate to the SharePoint homepage. When asked for your credentials, enter your Server username and password. If correct, you will be presented with this screen:

Tinkering Behind the Scenes: SharePoint Central Administration

This is where all the good stuff goes down. I accessed it via port 39574 on my server. Yours might be different. When in doubt, follow the Central Administration entry on your Start Menu of your Server.

Application Management

This section pertains to the control of Web Applications, Site Collections (including quotes, creating and deleting, and configuring self-service site collections), Service Applications, and Databases.

System Settings

This is where the juicy settings typically lie. Here you can configure multiple servers if you have a SharePoint Farm, configure email and SMS settings, and get down and dirty with farm management including alternate access settings and features.

Monitoring

Review the health of your server overall including possible problems and solutions, check jobs, and work with reporting including logs, configuring diagnostics, and data collection.

Backup and Restore

This is where all your backups and restorations take place. This includes backing up your entire farm, as well as even a granular backup for a specific site collection.

I’ll let you discover the rest for yourself. No sense in giving it all away.

In Conclusion

Setting up a SharePoint server can be rather easy if you know something about how Windows Server works. It doesn’t have to be much, either. Once you have it installed, spend some time tweaking the settings and getting to know SharePoint for what it is, a great collaboration suite that allows you to work with clients and co-workers all over the world, share information, and even plan events and projects, all from your Web browser.

Until next time!

Is it improper to code for Windows on a Mac? Maybe so, but I like it. I’m sure it makes me an odd one given that the typical Mac user doesn’t want anything to do with Windows. Words of Advice: Don’t go to themacuser.org. Seriously. Don’t. Why do I say that? Because I wanted some infos. I googled “typical mac user” and it was the fourth listing… I’m losing my mind. So while trying to find some juicy crap on Mac users (and ways to validate their stereotypes), I come across this page. I’m laughing at this guy’s rage. I am, really. He or she seems to be ranting about the stereotypical mac user, of which there are plenty. I wonder if he or she knows not all Mac users are like that? I know I’m not… but then again I’m not an idiot… I guess they have a point. So I was watching this video: xxx and two things came to mind:

The whole point of the video is valid: every person in the Mac commercial is using their hands over-zealously. I get that. Yeah, they look retarded, which segways me into my second point…

Everyone is describing some inane, vague, my-grandmother-can-describe-this-better problem. “I was using a PC and then half my paper was… like… gone” (could be paraphrasing that one)… I laughed at that piece, out loud. The thing about this video is that no one ever explained WHY they had a problem. No one ever thought to mention that maybe it was their own dumb ass who couldn’t figure out that their printer needed to be on or they needed to save from time to time in case they have a power outage.

The problem with Apple propaganda is this: while there is validity to their claims that “it just works” (I’ll explain next paragraph), they also over-emphasize that Windows problems are solely caused by Windows as if it’s existence is a bane on humanity. The Apple Media Machine leaves out that A lot of problems come from user error (I can speak from experience) or programs that were poorly developed or designed. Now about it just working: I’ve own and have owned several Apple products: a Macbook Pro, iPod Classic 80gb, iPod Nano 8gb, and a Verizon iPhone 4s. Here’s what I have to say about the statement “it just works”: Most of the time, it does! Then again, I could say that about Windows, too. According to the aforementioned Web site I linked to earlier, a few topics on a Mac help forum were simple, stupid things. I decided to investigate these claims, myself. Upon arriving, I’m told that the forum has moved over to CNET, so I follow. I figure that there’s a better chance of dumbass-ery there. I hit up the OS X category and find this thread. Can I LOL yet? I think I will. (LOLs) Ten bucks says the user started touching stuff they didn’t understand and inadvertently screwed it up on their own. I should try to find one a bit harder, maybe I’ll be able to validate claims that “it just [doesn't work]“. How about this user’s claim that Parallels is crashing and sucking up most of their processor. Well… Hmm… Looks like a 3rd-party problem, to me. Still just working.

I totally forgot what I was writing about.

The End.

For those who are familiar with VisualBasic and C#, VisualStudio is probably at “back-of-hand” status. If you’re new to Visual programming, either VB or Visual C#, LightSwitch might be what you’re looking for to get started. With a very similar UI and enough hand-holding to get the job done without hitting up the Internet. I’m not a total newb when it comes to programming (I have some background in PHP/MySQL) so I can generally get the idea when I look at code, regardless of the language. Programming for an Operating System, however, is new territory for me. Here’s how I fared.

NOTE: You will need Microsoft SQL Express in order to create VSLS applications. If you installed VSLS already, SQL Express 2008 will already be on your machine. If you are running these apps on a machine without VSLS, make sure to download Microsoft SQL Express 2008 R2 from Microsoft for 32 and 64 bit operating systems.

Starting from Scratch

The home screen is pretty basic, which is good. I don’t want to be bombarded by all sorts of tools and options. If it’s your first time, choosing “Introduction to LightSwitch” is a great place to start. Since I used it before writing this, I’m skipping that step and going to create my own application. It can’t be too hard.

Fire it Up!

It’s time to put your thinking caps on. If you have a tin foil hat, you’ll need to remove it… don’t worry, you’ll survive. The Government said they wouldn’t watch us for a while. The first thing you need to think about it what exactly you want your amazing app to do. Are you going to track client information? Do you need to store your list of local pizza joints somewhere on your computer but a text file or Excel document just doesn’t cut it? Have no fear, you can do both. I’ll tackle the former, however. (If you’re too lazy to start from scratch or just don’t care, Microsoft has a Starter Kit for “Customer Service” that you can download for LightSwitch in both VisualBasic and Visual C# flavors here.)

Assemble the Data Table

I decided I will track my clients and every project I do for them. Now that I know what I want, I need to start creating a data table that will sufficiently hold all of the proper information. I’m going to provision for the general stuff right now including name, address, phone number, and what type of project it is. If I wanted to get into more complex detail, I could create a second table that housed the nitty gritty of each project and link the two tables together.

That looks pretty good, right? Take note that I adjusted the plural form of “ClientList” to reflect that this is, well, one list of clients, not one client of lists (or whatever).

Making Data Entry Look Pretty

So now that we have a table to store our goods into, we need to create the UI to interact with said table. For this scenario, we want to be able to do three things:

View the entire list of clients

Choose a single client to view all details

Add additional clients

Choose “Screens” from the top right window and head to Project > Add Screen in your top menu. Pick the display type you wish to use, choose the data on the right side, and click OK.

Note: the Details Screen is only for pop-out windows showing details of a record.

In the above image, I pulled down each set of details for the screen. In this display, we have two sub-displays: a Rows layout for the Client List and a Rows layout for a specific Client chosen in the Above List. Curious as to what this actually looks like? Hit F5 or go to the Debug menu. Here’s what we have so far:

It looks pretty bland but in the last ten or so minutes, we’ve gotten a lot farther than someone who coded all of this by hand. If you’re curious enough to run the project as it stands, right now, here’s a download link: application [8mb] | (don’t forget SQL Express, you’ll need it, too).

This is the end of part one. I’ll conclude with part two (adding additional screens and tweaking how data is displayed at a later date).

If you use LightSwitch, I would like to see what you come up with so post in the comments!

I can’t count how many times I’ve been looked at weird because I like my toilet paper to hang out over the roll. I also can’t count how many times I’ve run into toilet paper rationing issues because it tears prematurely thanks to under-roll installations.

Don’t get me started on poor TP roll-holder placement. If I wanted it to roll into the toilet on it’s own accord because it’s so far behind me, I would clearly make it known.

For the six people that probably read this, I feel I need to clarify what made me think of this in the first place. Because I do no real work and have proclaimed my self the master slacker, I stumbled across this infographic. I found myself agreeing with every statement.

So to summarize, that wonderful roll of Charmin, AngelSoft, Cottonelle, or whatever crappy-house-brand-that-feels-like-sandpaper-and-dead-souls you buy may end up turning you into Hans Gruber. We don’t want any problems when you drop your own smelly version of the Nakatomi building into the bowl.

That is all. Good Day.

No one will hear it.

Before I explain why I enjoy talking to myself so incredibly much, let me give you a bit of back story behind why I decided to start discussing life with my other self.

At it stands right now, I spend roughly two to two and a half hours on the road each day. There is only one reason for this: I live to dang far away from where I work. Some would ask why I chose to work for my employer who is seemingly on the other side of the world? Well because my employer basically runs the Internet, that’s why. For those that don’t know, I work for Google, Inc. and that is all I will say about that. While my job does not entail any life or death situations, I find that different various events and other instances that come my way deserve discussion. Unfortunately, there is only one person that understands them like I do: me.

Technically there’s two parts to my reasoning. Given that I spend a lot of time on the road, I often take refuge in the satellite radio camp. Thanks to SiriusXM, most of the time I am content. With something like 130 channels at my disposal, if I can’t find something to listen to, Houston has a problem.

Yesterday was a Monday, if you follow the standard Earth calendar. Usually Mondays are stressful and serve little other purpose other than to reminisce over the fact that the weekend is over.

At this point in my revelation of my thoughts, I have forgotten what I was saying and feel this post is going down hill.

Maybe I’ll talk about my weekend, while I try to remember what I was saying (looking at the title doesn’t help me). For those who enjoy the cinema still and don’t immediately resort to torrents, you and I may have something in common. Over the weekend I saw 30 Minutes or Less with a lovely lady.

It is not a date movie.

There is too much boob.

Unless you like that sort of thing.

And she likes that sort of thing, too.

Or you don’t have standards.

Which I do.

Awkward.

Moving on.

PS: Thank you Bianca Kajlich for ruining Rules of Engagement for me. While you are a very attractive movie star, I felt weird watching you. Sincerely. Me.

It was a hilarious movie, otherwise. It may have been a bit too vulgar for my tastes and I think hers, too, but we still got loads of kicks out of it. (Speaking of kicks, how does one get kicks from something? Maybe we’re talking shoes?)

After the movie, I discovered something that may not be all that good. If you or anyone you know has shopped at a Forever 21, you may know that they carry men’s clothing. Again, another weird moment. A women’s clothing store carrying men’s clothing. I guess that’s not THAT odd since people typically think of places like Macy’s and JCPenny as places women go to buy clothes, too.

I digress. I decided to hit up forever21.com and I felt incredibly awkward browsing the site. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if the singular male model they used didn’t look so flamboyantly gay. It almost seems like they are implying that only gay dudes need shop at Forever 21. I can agree with that. I’ll buy my F21 jeans in secret.

Another revelation took place that night. After about 10pm, the streets of Seattle seem to enact it’s own immune system on those not driving. If you plan on walking the streets, keep in mind that after about a half hour, the creeps will start to surface and come after you. Where they come from I am still working on. I think the sewers may provide clues. If you still have money at this time, it would be a good idea to get rid of it.

By get rid of it, I mean spend it. Fast.

The creeps smell money.

It’s like crack.

They know crack, too.

They’ll just use it to buy crack.

So crack > money > crack.

Moving on.

Bars are not good places to have standards for food and Jack is tasty.

…

Back to my original story. Yesterday, as I was driving home, I started thinking about my second calling, cinematography. I started thinking about something I want to do involving it. I come up with ideas, then start shooting them down as I realize that the History Channel, Discovery, A&E, and NatGeo have already done many a series.

While it doesn’t seem that intense or worthy of discussion to begin with, it’s a big deal for me… because when I finished my conversation, I was home. Forty-five miles had rolled past under my freshly scraped up car (because what hospital doesn’t let those who use their garage leave? No curb is too big).

I’ve gotten absolutely no where and it says that I’ve written 841 words. I think that’s a good place to call it.

‘Till next time.
